Variety International Haiti Mission

Variety International is presently responding to the Haiti earthquake disaster through a collaborative with Children's Health Missions, International and Dr. Ben Fredrick of Penn State's Global Health Program.

Dr. Fredrick serves as the Director of Variety International's children's outreach project in Pestel, Haiti. Pestel was not impacted by the earthquake, however Dr. Fredrick, the Director of Penn State's Global Health Center has been appointed by the Dean and Chief Executive of Hershey Penn State Harold L. Paz, M.D., as the lead person for Hershey Medical Center and Penn State's Medical College response to the Haiti disaster.

Dr. Fredrick is gathering medical supplies and forming an emergency medical team to travel to Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

"We are in the process of working out the details with a Haitian American physician who will be traveling to Haiti in the next day or so. Once we have a better understanding of the situation, we're planning to focus our efforts and donations. We are putting together a medical-surgical team to Haiti soon for the 'recovery phase' of the operation and are collecting medical-surgical donations--the Hershey Medical Center will be donating medical equipment and supplies such as IV equipment, bandages, hospital beds, etc. Medical students are also fund raising.

I wish to thank the Variety International community that is around the world for their support. The need is so vast, despite the many efforts. There will be costs for such things as translators, supplies, and in-country transportation, rebuilding structures, other medical equipment. The list of needs will be big, but what we accomplish will be greater because of Variety International's support."

We will continue to report back to you the implementation of this relief mission that Variety International is making possible.
